Experiences of Past Interns

Chris Meik
BYU, Majoring in Business
Intern from 8/05 to 8/06
chrismeik@gmail.com

I first found out about the internship from a Chinese friend in the States. I was a little hesitant at first because I had heard horror stories about scam artists in China.

I talked to Perry (QingPing) on the phone a few times, he speaks great English, and we also exchanged a few emails. After doing a little investigating I decided to take it. We agreed on compensation for my work, which I thought was extremely fair considering most internships don't pay anything.

Ever since I got here I've been happy with my decision. I've been able to learn about the Chinese culture and make some great friends.

The best way to describe working here is flexibility. I work 20 hours a week. I come and go as I please. There are some days I don't do all my hours so I just make them up another day. All Perry requires is that I keep him informed about my hours. He just wants to make sure they are getting done. Every once in a while there is a project on a short deadline so Perry asks me to stick around to finish it. But this has only happened 3 or 4 times in the last year and it only takes a few extra hours that I just end up applying to future work hours.

Perry has provided both food and housing. For breakfast, I usually pick up something on the way to work, like a little pastry. For lunch the company goes to a university cafeteria real close to the office. They have tons of stuff to choose from. For dinner Perry's wife makes dinner. She's from Yunan Province, which I think makes the best food. There are also tons of restaurants, I have a few favorites that I hit up a few times a week.

I've also been able to learn a lot about Chinese law. I edit lots of papers that are translated from Chinese to English that concern current legislation and legal issues. Before I got here I also wanted to set up my own internet company. I've been able to learn a lot from Perry and I was able to trade hours for work from his programmers. That has helped me a lot in setting up my business.

Even before coming to China, I've wanted to get some business contacts here. That's another great thing about this internship. Perry has introduced me to some great people. I've met several lawyers that do everything from intellectual property to immigration. I also met a judge, and several entrepreneurs. I even got a free suit from a friend who works for a factory that manufactures for JC Penny.

When I got here I didn't speak much Chinese and I still don't. What's great about LawSpirit is that there are tons of employees that speak English so anytime I want to go somewhere or buy something, they help me get around by either telling me the bus number or the subway stop. The office is really close to a subway stop which I have really grown to appreciate because I save so much time and money on transportation.

Businesses in China are required to set aside a certain percentage of profits as a recreation fund for their employees. We've taken two big trips with that fund. One was a few nights stay on the beach. That was a lot of fun. We also went to the Great Wall for a few days. Because I was traveling with a Chinese company I was able to see and do a lot more things that I wouldn't have been able to do if I was with a tourist group. I saw an original and remote section of the Great Wall and the beach we went to only had about 3 foreigners out of thousands of people. I love that side of China.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to write. I'll be here until August. You can reach me at chrismeik@gmail.com

Lawspirit is a fun place, with a lot of fun people. Believe me, they take care of you here. Whenever I have asked for anything, there are four or five people more than willing to help. One of the first things that impressed me about this place was how good people treated me. And as far as the language goes, there are several people who speak proficient English, and everyone speaks a little bit. And if you are one of those who wants to learn to speak Chinese, you could not be in a better place.

This company is ran fair, efficiently, and professionally. Hu Qingping is always concerned about my welfare, and if I am liking this or that, he does always want to make sure that I am productive though.

As far as the work goes, it is a very cool job, because you get to read law and business info, as an insider; things that yes, they do keep from foreigners. Which is a plus if you are looking to do business here, or are pre-law, and want to work with China. I also do some recording of law content for the website, which goes very quickly. And once again, it is very educational.

The LDS branch here is really awesome too. I think this is one of the best wards I have been in. The people are great, and very giving, and very, very social.

Another plus side about this job is the financial aspect of it. Room and board is provided, plus some spending cash, and that is only for 20 hours a week. The rest of the time you can make over 20 USD an hour, teaching English, tax free. So with little to no living cost, you get a great chance to make some decent cash for the next year of school.

I really love working at Lawspirit, and I will really miss the friends I have made. I would recommend this internship to anyone who is looking for a future in Chinese business, Law, Language, or is just looking for the Chinese experience.
